Holiday Cards? kiss my @ss
I go to Wal-mart today to buy my Christmas cards, ask where to find Christmas cards and was told they are no longer called Chrismas cards but their Holiday Cards are in seasonal lol
I walked out Went to the Hallmark store and noticed all boxes are now called holiday cards not Christmas cards.. I am making a point to say Merry Christmas to everyone I even actually used my cell to call people to say Merry Christmas no one is going to take it away from me... I don't mind some people wanting holiday cards but don't take away Christmas cards to do so rant over |

Re: Holiday Cards? kiss my @ss
When she said that, you should have said, "I'm not looking for holiday cards, I'm looking for Christmas cards. Thanks anyway. And I know it's a bit early yet, but have a MERRY CHRISTMAS."
I wouldn't actually say that, but it would be tempting. |

Re: Holiday Cards? kiss my @ss
Merry Christmas everyone from me too! My, it's shocking how times have changed! When I was in school, the week before Christmas at school was a very exciting time for us kids! We had a Christmas program (and yes a school sponsored program where we sang traditional Christmas carols, like Silent Night---one year in German, Oh Come All Ye Faithful---in Latin), then after the program Santa came and gave all of us a paper sack full of goodies, the last day of school before break we had a Christmas party and had drawn names for a present, etc. Christmas was wonderful. Of course I grew up in a really small town, probably at least 90% were Lutherans, with a handfull of us Catholics mixed in for good measure. The town and school are much larger now though. I'm not sure how much things have changed.
Dad's lady friend's daughter teaches in my home town school. I'll have to ask her how much they're allowed to celebrate Christmas now. |

Re: Holiday Cards? kiss my @ss
It does not bother me, to me I still know it is Christmas, I still say Merry Christmas, it is not the employees fault, but management. But, it has to be hard for them, there are so many different religions, such as the Jewish faith, they don't celebrate Christmas. We have a holiday party at work, not a big deal, no matter what it is called we will still have a great time. By saying holiday it includes everyone and in my mind it is Christmas

Re: Holiday Cards? kiss my @ss
Well, I've been around different religions all my life and calling it Christmas has never been a problem; I know people of other religions who even celebrate it (cultural for them). Others choose not to. They all have their own religious holidays and they don't have to call their special days just a "holiday". It's called by its name and I personally wish them a happy (fill in the blank) day, even though it's not MY holiday. Why should Christian holidays suffer?
Christmas is Christmas. Easter is Easter. Let's keep it that way. |

Re: Holiday Cards? kiss my @ss
As a Christian, I celebrate Christmas. My Jewish neighbors celebrate Hanukah (sp?). I do not see anything wrong with calling the holidays what they are. And like Kali, I wish others Happy _____, whatever their holiday is, and hope they will wish me a Merry Christmas. Last year, they wanted to decorate their door too like the rest of the neighborhood, so she put up a wreath with blue lights on it.

Good points, SavhLaney, Kali & Beachreader!! And of course all others who think Christmas should not be made generic. If you know someone is Jewish, then wish them Happy Hannakah (sp?). Otherwise, I don't think nonbelievers should object to someone wishing them well.

Re: Holiday Cards? kiss my @ss
My boss and I were talking about this today, it appears the problem might be that we as a society have become too politically correct- with where I work there are many patients of all religious backgrounds, there are many families with all religious backgrounds, many patients and families who do not believe in God. The hospital cannot celebrate every holiday so happy holidays covers all of them- I don't agree with this, but I can see management's point, it is easier at the stores and businesses to have happy holidays, it makes everyone happy in the sense that no one is being excluded. I do say Merry Christmas, but if a store employee who is told to say happy holidays I am not going to be offended- there are worse things to be upset about....as long as I can find what I am looking for then I am happy- I went to Hallmark after work and they have a great display of Christmas items. I love the Willow Tree angel collection, I got one for a friend's birthday- they know have the willow tree Nativity set, gorgeous, I might get it.

Many corporate 'holiday greeting cards' are printed with 'holiday greetings' in many languages/wishes.
All inclusive card - certainly won't offend anyone and exclude anyone.

When someone says that you know they are totally tuned out of the discussion and are expressing their disinterest. I don't care what anyone says to excuse it for "politically correct" reasons. Taking the word Christmas out of our language doesn't serve to equalize the importance of all religious observances.......it simply diminishes the meaning of Christmas.

Re: Holiday Cards? kiss my @ss
Why is Xmas short for Christmas?
Because it is Christian shorthand for Christmas, the X standing for Christ. Way back when, Greek was the language of Christianity. The New Testament was written in Greek. Greek was and is written using the Greek alphabet, not the alphabet we use. You can still see traces of it in old symbols and phrases still used, like calling God 'the alpha and the omega' meaning 'the beginning and the end' because alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet and omega is the last. It's like calling him the A to Z. Another place you might still find Greek in use in modern western Christianity is the Ichthys or fish symbol. You'll have seen it somewhere, it's the classic fish shape that people sometimes use to show they're Christian. You can look up its history somewhere else, but it's called an Ichthys because that is Greek for fish. Why a fish as a symbol of Christianity? Because 'Ichthys' stands for Iēsous Khristos Theou Huios, Sōtēr = Jesus Christ God's Son, Saviour. The 'ch' in Ichthys stands for Christ, and the Greek letter used to mean 'ch' looks a lot like an X. So, from ancient times Christians have used the Greek letter that looks like an X as an abbreviation of 'Christ'. For the last few centuries, people have used an actual X instead, particularly if they don't know Greek. So, 'Christians' is abbreviated to 'Xians', 'Christ' is abbreviated to 'X' and 'Christmas' is abbreviated to 'Xmas'. This is useful when people want a shorter way of writing something, and is a reminder of Christianity's roots. |

Re: Holiday Cards? kiss my @ss
You know, this reminds me of the time I worked at a Hallmark store for some extra $$$ during the holidays.
A customer asked where the Hannakuh cards were, and I pointed them out to her. A few minutes later, red faced, and shaking a card in my face, she went off about her there were hardly any Hannakuh cards, and how I should talk to the powers that be about getting a better selection in. I apologized and told her that we had no say over what we got in stock. "YOU SHOULD MAKE THIS YOUR PRIORITY!!" She shouted at me the first in a long line of customers. Geez. Looking back, I get her frustration, but I hardly was in any position to demand anything. Wouldn't have done any good. I was pretty pissed, but not b/c of the cards, mainly b/c she was shaking her card in my face. :/

Those situations suck, because there's not much you can do, if you still want to keep your job.
In those instances, I would just Smile and Nod. Thankfully, I never have to talk to people face to face in my line of work...it's all over the phone. And I talk to the same 10-15 people every day. So what did you end up doing, or saying to her? After she yelled in your face after you apologized?

I don't mind so much saying happy holidays to people who I'm not sure celebrate Christmas. What I really object to is anybody being BANNED from it; it should be a personal choice. That and the schools not being able to have Christmas vacation, Christmas dances, etc. Holiday tree...give me a break on that one. Christmas is the only holiday I know of that has a tree for the celebration.

I was looking at some cards earlier today while shopping and reading some of the texts on the back of the boxed cards.
There was one that featured a beautiful decorated Christmas tree with an angel topper and said something like : Next time you are trimming the tree and place the angel on top...............would you really like to have a tree up your @ss ? *************************************************************** Not a card that maybe appropriate for all those on your list. or maybe ?

Re: Holiday Cards? kiss my @ss
Sam- that card would have been perfect for my uncle, he passed away last year at the age of 78- he had a real crazy, sick sense of humor, he was a wild and crazy man and a huge flirt, I would talk to him every Saturday and I still miss him...yep, he would have loved that card.
Mac- I agree we have become too politically correct, but no one can change your beliefs, no one has told you to stop celebrating Christmas, to stop saying Merry Christmas, or to stop going to church- your beliefs is your inner core and no one can take that away. The employees, the employers, stores, businesses have changed but that does not mean we have to change and they have only changed because of management. Just because my job is having a holiday party and not a christmas party does not mean that I will stop saying Merry Christmas or stop believing.... |

So, should Jewish people have to change Menorah Candles to Holiday Candles? Sounds ridiculous, doesn't it? The same as calling a Christmas tree a Holiday tree.
