I have to say I had two specials that I really liked when I was a little guy. One was a hard candy called fruit drops. they would last for ten minutes in your mouth and they were all different flavours and sour too with a transparent white sugary coating.

***********************************************************

I remember those!! They came in a tin can, right!!??!! They were round and flat. They were the best hard candy!

Hey, that's right they did come in a round tin can. Used the tin to keep my allowance in after.

I used to be the loan shark to my older brothers that smoked. I charged 10% per week. They hated me for that / I was five.

We still have a big laugh about me charging them interest. ha-ha

That's funny.

Think I was eight when they stopped getting money from me but by then I had made allot of cash from their habit.

10% to be their brother, that's good. I like your entrepreneurial spirit.

I lived on Belleview which turned into Colds Spring Road which was off Laffayette Road and really close to the Pole. I was a cheerleader at Indianapolis Washington in 1965 when we won our first State Championship in basketball. I loved the pie from the Pole and the cheeseburgers were great. Many a night was spent driving around the block and cruising the Pole. and Frisches was nextdoor along with Longs Bakery. Did you live in Indy area?

I never heard of it. Are you from the East coast area? My husband is from Philly and many of the trends there never got to the midwest and many of the fashion trends would start in the East before we caught on in the heartland.

Now, Frisches or however it is spelled is no longer in the Indy area but is still in Ohio. And,they had the best pecan pie. Also, Grey Bros. cafeteria in Mooresville is known for their great pies.........There are still a couple Frishes in Indiana but most are gone now.....And, last time I went by Pole, I think it might have been a used car lot or something. You can't go home again..........very sad.........

Frisches was a huge deal when I was a kid in Ohio. They had the best burgers and chocolate shakes. We also had a drive in called Frost Top. They had root beer and chili dogs that were the best anywhere. A real treat for us on a Saturday.

Does anyone remember White House ice cream? We got it at Isaly's and it was vanilla and it had whole black cherries in it.

***********************************************************
Oh YEAH! White House!!! There was an ice cream store in this wee little town that was hardly a town at all, but they made the BEST ice cream! From what I remember though, their White House was vanilla with red marachino cherries in it -----BIG CHUNKS!!! We used to stop there every Saturday morning after CCD, and sometimes after church on Sunday.

My dad makes the best peanut brittle at Christmas! It's always just the right color, and NEVER sticky, always crunchy. I also loved marshmallow cups. Now I love Midnight Milky Ways. There were so many candies and cookies I loved growing up, it'd be easier listing the ones I didn't like.

I wonder if Frisches originated in Ohio? There are still many there. Big Boys were so good. I think my husband said in Philadelphia they had Big Boy Burgerama or something like that. There is also a place in Northwest Ohio called The Spot and their cheeseburgers taste very much like Big Boys from Frisches.

samuel frisch 1905(cincinnati,ohio) had frischs cafe in 1939 the sons opened the mainliner(after the old man passed) on wooster pike named after the planes that flew over in 1932 dave frisch went to bob wian's big boy in glendale, calif and when he came back he decided that the big boys out west were good made with 100 island dressing so dave made it with homeade tater sauce and it's been going ever since they have big boy's all over kips, elias, aztar and others you buy into the franchise and either go as 1000 island dressing like shoney's does(former pal of the frisch's family) or the frisch's way with tarter sauce they also own golden corral chains.my one daughter when she lived in cincinnati was a server at frisch's .

some of those wax lips had a liquid filling in them, I guess like those wax coke bottles someone mentioned earlier in this thread.

I mentioned the coke bottles, but they were gummi coke bottles. And they tasted like Cola!

Oh ya. but there were wax products that had different flavours of liquid "stuff'. Looking back I'm sure it was all probably bio hazard type stuff to what we know today. ha-ha

scary stuff.

Beemans Gum. The best.

Go to the Vermont Country Store for old school candy or try O'Ryans online. I love to browse. Good times, good times.

MacBug talking about her times with perfect peanut brittle...

reminded me of the Lemon Meringue Pies my mom used to make, She was a genius at those things; never found one that matched hers since she's gone.

Re: What were your favorite candies and confections as a child?

Dad is 87 yrs old and still makes his peanut brittle. He's still living in the house we grew up in. Mom passed away 7 yrs ago.

Every year right after Thanksgiving we'd have marathon cookie and candy making sessions. We'd even make popcorn balls, that were crunchy, not with marshmallow like Rice Krispie bars, though I like those too.

Gee I miss not being able to call my mom anymore whenever I want to know how she made something.

***********************************************************

samuel frisch 1905(cincinnati,ohio) had frischs cafe in 1939 the sons opened the mainliner(after the old man passed) on wooster pike named after the planes that flew over in 1932 dave frisch went to bob wian's big boy in glendale, calif and when he came back he decided that the big boys out west were good made with 100 island dressing so dave made it with homeade tater sauce and it's been going ever since they have big boy's all over kips, elias, aztar and others you buy into the franchise and either go as 1000 island dressing like shoney's does(former pal of the frisch's family) or the frisch's way with tarter sauce they also own golden corral chains.my one daughter when she lived in cincinnati was a server at frisch's .

***********************************************************

very interesting.......I was in Richmond Ind last night and had a Big Boy. Almost as good as they used to be. We also have a fast food place here called Steak and Shake and their burgers used to have thousand island dressing on them and made them stand out from others. Unfortunately, they no longer use it on their sandwiches.

Anderson Indiana still has one I think. As of a couple years ago. Don't know why Indiana no longer has them like they used to. People loved them.

Re: What were your favorite candies and confections as a child?

Bob's Big Boy is like Frisch's. OMG! I miss it so much. Did you ever buy their tartar sauce? They sold it in glass jars.

They are only in a few states now. Ohio, Illinois, California, North Dakota and North Carolina.

When we were in high school, the guys used to steal the Big Boy and put him on the roof of the school.

Just checked the website. There is a disclaimer that Big Boy is not affiliated with Frisch's. I will take a Big Boy from either. With onion rings.

Re: What were your favorite candies and confections as a child?

Here it was called JB's Big Boy I think. I wasn't quite sure at first that you all were talking about the same restaurant chain. That's where I had my first patty melt----a hamburger on grilled rye bread with Swiss cheese, Amer cheese & grilled onions. Right? Oh how I loved those patty melts! We don't have any of those restaurants around here anymore. I'm not sure what happened to them.

I never heard of chicken bones......But, back to Frishes.......They had the Buddie Boy which was hot ham and cheese....Brawney Lad (was it fish???) Good strawberry pie and pecan and the big boy basket with fries and slaw. One of the boys my husband coached once got in trouble in college for stealing the large big Boy lawn ornament and holding it for ransom. Don't remember how much trouble he got into or if he got any big boy payments.
